The YMCA's diver rescue course is called SCUBA Lifesaving and Accident Management (SLAM). This name emphasizes the dual focus of the course. This course teaches SLAM through CARE.
Cognizance - recognition of potential problems and resources available to prevent or solve a problem.
Assessment - evaluation of potential problems and situations before selecting a course of action.
Rescue - the physical or verbal actions taken to prevent or minimize injury
Evacuation - all of the management that must occur after a rescue has been made.
